Out With the Old, In With the New: PRG 5L Wash & Best Boy™ LED Retrofit
Lighting fixtures have evolved from basic incandescent units to sophisticated LED arrays with advanced control systems. Still, there is something to be said about the nostalgic appeal of old fixtures. They possess a certain tangible craftsmanship and character that is often missing in today’s designs.
What if you could have the best of both worlds — A fixture with the retro style of an older light and the capabilities and performance of a modern LED light?
Well – now you can. We have been taking our old VL5’s and Best Boy HP’s and retrofitting them with modern LED engines. These innovative fixtures combine the timeless aesthetic of classic lighting with the energy efficiency and superior performance of modern technology. Made with sustainability in mind, they reuse the body of their predecessors and are retrofitted with LED, ultimately using less power. Let’s take a look at each of these products and explore the transformations they’ve undergone.
PRG 5L Wash
Reminiscent of an automated PAR, the PRG 5L is a retrofit of the beloved OG Vari-lite VL5. The VL5 was an iconic lighting fixture from the early 90’s. The first of its kind, it featured a patented radial dichroic color changer, compact size and silent operation. The PRG 5L takes the VL5 and replaces the old incandescent bulbs with a modern RGBW LED engine.
Some of the key benefits of the 5L include its compact size, allowing for use of more fixtures, its low power usage which ultimately costs less to run and its unique retro style, reminiscent of lighting fixtures of the ’90s.

PRG Best Boy™ LED
The PRG Best Boy™ LED is a precision-engineered automated luminaire with an all-inclusive feature set. We took its predecessor, the Best Boy HP, and replaced the lamp and reflector with a high-wattage, cool white LED engine. The Best Boy™ LED is more energy efficient while matching the output of the Best Boy HP, producing over 30,000 lumens at only 850w.
The robust design of the Best Boy HP was created and developed by touring and event professionals. With newly added gobo and prism effects, fast and fluid color mixing and an adjustable wheel for color correction, this light has the whole package. Offering a massive Zoom from 8º to 64º, this fixture is perfect for short and long throw applications. With the retrofit, the Best Boy™ LED boasts all the same capabilities with a significant decrease in power consumption.
